GSB 2014 Day Photos

A VERY big day again for many with a climb up to Tuohys Saddle and along the range to Crown Saddle. Something about "pushing" and false summits got frequent mention.

The weather and the views however compensated for the pain (well for most it did).  Massive 360 degree views of the high Central Otago ranges and an epic stage in every way.

When you reach the blue bit turn right and it just another 500 meters up ;-)

There may have been the odd section of bike pushing

Pushing should be rewarded with some sitting down

GSB 2014 Day 3 Txts

A big day again in fine weather, no rest on the Great Southern Brevet.

Someone asked at the start in Tekapo if it was going to be harder or easier than last time, guess the Crown Range answered that one emphatically ;-)

GSB 2014 Day 2 Txts

A Day of Contrast(s)

The calm, windless peace of Day 1 was replaced by the steady drone of the wind. Tough going into it but at your back you could hit 50 kph!

The front runners saw rain while others mostly contended with the strong winds. Late in the day the rain stopped and the wind died down allowing many to make a last minute dash to clock up valuable kilometers.

The evening finished with a brilliant sunset over the mountains surrounding Wanaka.

A few issues with equipment saw some riders make a beeline for the bike shops of Wanaka. Hopefully all will be able to start again tomorrow.

For those within striking distance of Wanaka the biggest climb and highest point of the ride awaits. And after that comes the challenge of making the last sailing of the day of the Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu. Not an easy task with many having clocked up 200+ kilometers today. The wise choice may be a good day out in the hills and a good rest in Queenstown for the morning sailing of the Earnslaw on Tuesday perhaps?

GSB 2014 Day 1 Video

The Great Southern Brevet 2014 riders turning off the black stuff just west of Tekapo to head into big sky country and a week of adventure!

GSB 2014 Day 1 Txts

Two words describe the riding on Day 1: Fast and Furious (OK then 3 words).

The complete absence of wind meant the riders rallied unimpeded through the vast Mackenzie countryside and on into the sleepy town of Twizel.

A late afternoon threat of rain didn't dampen spirits as riders forged on towards Flannagans Pass. A gentle (NOT) climb up to 1225 metres. Riders then pop out overlooking Lake Ohau and the Ohau Range with views up the Dobson and Hopkins Rivers.

A fast descent followed by a gentle cruise around the shores of Lake Ohau saw most achieve good times and progress on Day 1.

Txt messages just a little brief and perhaps dry like the conditions. Expect Day 2 to show a bit more emotion as another big climb and perhaps some wet feet liven things up.

Of course a beer at the infamous Vulcan Hotel in St. Bathans awaits the thirsty and brave!

GSB 2014 Day 1 Photos

A spectacular day with perfect riding conditions (cool morning and no wind) and scenery to match.

Sunrise in Tekapo with full moon over the church of the Good Shepherd

Stacked 2 high and still didn't fit in the picture, the line up for the Great Southern Brevet 2014

The warm up hill (push?)

The peloton with Mt Cook for background

A fantastic evening as riders descend off Flannagans Pass (left of the Ben Ohau summit)

Still smiling! Even if the 40 minute push was really 80 minutes!

Grand Depart! 18 January 2014

The start location is obvious...

Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo
The Start time......

11:00 AM

Please be there from 10:00 AM as we have SPOT Trackers to hand out and a briefing (and you can ask any last minute questions).

If the parking lot in front on the church is full of tourists then the grassy knoll opposite (in photo foreground) will be where we will set up.

Remember the start is neutralised as we have a couple of crossings of State Highway 8. Wouldn't want something to go wrong this early so it will be a leisurely and cautious start till we hit Lake Alexandrina Reserve. It is a small loop to test if you have tied your gear on tight ;-)

I will be in Tekapo hopefully from around 7:00 PM tomorrow (Friday evening). Am staying just to the right of the photo so pop round if you need any last minute encouragement (liquid?).

Live Tracking! GSB 2014

Have sent the files off to Scott in the US and hopefully he will have time before Saturday morning (fingers crossed) to get the Live Tracking on Trackleaders.com running.

trackleaders

Will update the link (see tab above) once it is available.

Trackleaders.com offers real time tracking for long distance events from cycling (The Tour Divide) to Sled Dog Racing and everything in between.

Using SPOT Trackers - IMPORTANT

A couple of very important notes about using SPOT Trackers:

1. They must be turned off once a day!
  • The tracking has a maximum period of 24 hours. By turning it off and back on (and hitting the tracking button), you restart the 24 hour period.
2. They must have good line of sight of the sky!
  • Buried at the bottom of your pack won't work. Cable tied to your helmet (the GEN3 is 100g) or shoulder strap is best. Will bring some cable ties to attach them. You just need to remember to check them and to turn tracking on.
3. Push and hold the buttons for at least 3 seconds!
  • When it lights green you can let go. The lights will flash once a second from then on.
  • A red light on power means batteries are running out, on GPS there is no clear view of sky and on the message light, the message failed.
4. It is not instant!
  • A full message cycle can take over 10 minutes so start riding and check everything is green after 30 minutes.

5. Don't forget to pay if you are hiring ;-)
